First Peoples, British settlement, migration, states and territories, traditions, national days and national symbols.

Democratic beliefs, rights and liberties

Democracy, the rule of law, peaceful participation, freedoms, equality and citizenship responsibilities.

Government and the law

The Constitution, Parliament, voting, government, law-making, courts, police and juries.

Australian values

Freedom, respect, equality, lawful conduct, community safety and the values expected of people living in Australia.

Turn reading into recall

  1. 01Read one part without taking a quiz. Write down any term you could not explain.
  2. 02Read that part again. Turn the headings into short questions in your own words.
  3. 03Complete a section practice session and check the booklet after every mistake.
  4. 04Repeat the values part until you can explain why each answer fits Australian law and values.
  5. 05Finish with the official Home Affairs practice test.

Use community-language versions for understanding

Home Affairs publishes the booklet in English and community languages, but the test is in English. Read a translated version when a concept is unclear, then return to the English wording and practise it there.
